Birch Grove, Acton

The refurbishment and reorganisation of this large family home in Acton was completed in 2007. The design sought to create a family home with well connected living and entertaining spaces on the ground floor, and a strong connection to the garden, plus reorganised bathrooms to the first floor, improving in particular the relationship between the master bedroom and the en-suite.

The heavily modified ground floor spaces have a very open inter-connected feel, with continuous floor finishes. Architectural elements, such as the under-lit bench and large walnut panel door, help to reinforce spatial relationships and create drama. A large glass panel and bespoke sliding timber framed doors to the end of the kitchen allow broad views into the garden, and the bank of roof lights over the kitchen area flood the space with daylight. The first floor bathrooms use natural timbers to create warmth, with the master en suite bathroom connected to the master bedroom with a linear timber bench and sliding walnut door panel.

The client managed the project through the construction phase directly with the contractor and achieved a fantastic result. The build was based on Curtis Wood Architect’s drawings and specification and we were called upon to give just limited support to the construction team through the build.
