Raleigh Way, London
Submitted for planning consent in late 2008, our design for a subterranean micro-house in north London sought to create a new two bedroom home with courtyard, well proportioned living spaces and a roof terrace. This project is about reclaiming an unpromising and seemingly impossible site to create a beautiful small dwelling for our client.
The small brown-field site is occupied by two defunct domestic garages. The site is located in the back-land zone often found between the gardens of residential dwellings, so this new house needed to be almost hidden to avoid changing the nature of the area.
The building is two storeys in height, with the living spaces located at ground floor and the bedrooms and bathroom located at basement level. A two storey courtyard garden was proposed at the rear of the site to connect the bedroom patio spaces, the terrace to the ground floor kitchen and the roof terrace at the top of the building. Despite the site being just 58m2 the design achieves 50m2 of private outside space and an interior floor area of 65m2.
The building interior is planned to maximum efficiency. Through clever ideas for storage and multi-functional furniture, the spaces yield more than would normally be achieved through a domestic project. A combination of bright, light reflecting materials and a large expanse of glass to the private courtyard spaces will make the interior feel spacious and light.
