Hennessy House, Bayswater
Hennessy House is located along the north edge of Hyde Park in central London. Our client moved from a large New York apartment with their young family to this grade two listed five storey family house, which is set within a large Georgian terrace. The project was largely focused on the lower three floors and sought to give a sense of ‘horizontality’ to the living spaces, which our client had been so used to in their New York apartment.
Towards the rear – beneath a walk on glass floor – a flexible space was created with a glass courtyard, keeping the modern glass intervention separated from the listed rear façade. This flexible space acts as an additional living area, a winter garden, and a guest bedroom – via a hidden fold-down bed and is served by a small hidden kitchenette and shower space with steam room facility. Towards the front of the building at basement level an open plan bedroom suite with large en suite bathroom was created.
On the upper ground floor a large open plan kitchen was constructed with a glazed bay window extension to accommodate an island unit. The dining space towards the front was opened up to the study and hallway, to enhance horizontal connections and most significantly, the basement spaces adjoining the small urban rear garden were covered by a large walk-on glass floor, to further enlarge and connect the garden to the rest of the house. The work at first floor was more modest, with a remodelled conservatory and large open plan external terrace. This project was constructed by Scotscape Construction in 2008.
